Cardigan Market Hall

Project Management of the £3M refurbishment of Cardigan Market Hall
As the appointed project manager, H&D were engaged by Cardigan Building Preservation Trust following funding support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF). Further funding was secured via the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Programme and the Building for the Future scheme, alongside generous grants from Ceredigion County Council. In total over £3M was secured.
The projected consisted of an initial phase to construct a large access tower to the rear of the Hall, linking the rear public car park to the Market Hall. The second phase entailed the fit out works to access tower, comprises a passenger lift, stairwell and WCs. The refurbishment works to the Market Hall entailed the replacement of the large bespoke roof light, along with the Welsh slates, together with repairs/replacement of windows and doors.
On the lower floor, we have installed an underfloor central heating system to enhance comfort and energy efficiency. This area has also undergone significant renovation, with a focus on reusing as many of the original Cilgerran slate slabs as possible to retain its historic character.
To address long-standing issues with damp, the walls have been treated to prevent water ingress. In addition, the electrical system has been fully modernised to meet current standards, and solar panels have been installed on the roof to support the building’s sustainability goals.

For the duration of the works the market stall businesses were relocated to a number of other locations within the town centre and they returned to the wonderfully restored building in 2024.
